Vere English

Vere Edward English, 92, went to be with the Lord on May 30, 2025. He was born March 14, 1933 in Newton to parents David and Velma Jean English. He grew up on a farm north of Newton and graduated from Newton High School in 1951. While in high school he was active in FFA and was awarded the State Farmer degree. He was on the Vocational Ag judging team that went to state and national contests. Vere joined the United States Army in 1953 and served three years. He was stationed in Fontenet, France.

Following his military service, he attended Southwestern College. While there, he met his wife of 66 years, Beverly Clutter. They were wed November 21, 1959. Vere graduated with a BA in Biology from Southwestern and moved to Kansas City where he was employed at Midwest Research Institute while Beverly finished nursing school.

Vere and Beverly returned to Newton to tend to the family farm in 1961. He raised wheat, milo and alfalfa as well as managing a large sheep operation. He and Beverly raised three daughters on the farm. Vere belonged to the Sheep and Wool Association and served on the Farm Bureau Board, Farmers Grain Coop Board, the Farm and Home Administration Board, the Harvey County ASCS Board, the Harvey County Historical Museum Board and the Harvey County 4-H Foundation. He was active in Rural Life. Vere was also a 4-H Leader for many years. Vere and Beverly spent many winters in Arizona where he enjoyed working on Habitat for Humanity Houses. He was an avid gardener, often trying out new and interesting crops. Other hobbies included woodworking, church men’s group and traveling to see family.

Vere was a charter member of Trinity Heights United Methodist Church where he served on many committees, taught Sunday School and Youth groups.

Vere was always seeking knowledge and enjoyed both learning along with and teaching his children and grand-children. He and Beverly traveled to Israel several times, Greece, Germany, England, France, Canada, Scandinavia and all across the USA.

Vere is survived by his wife Beverly, daughters Norma Jean Miller, Jolene (Dan) Cox and Darla (Dave) Outcalt, 11 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, brothers Darrel (Yvonne) English and Norval English as well as 6 nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is scheduled on June 24th at 10:00 am at Trinity Heights UMC in Newton, 1200 Boyd Street, Newton, Kansas.
