Obituary - Stanley Ann Floyd (Young)

Stan, Stanley Ann Floyd (Young), at 90 years and eight days old, passed, September 24, 2025. Stan was born on September 16, 1935 in Wichita, Kansas to Dwight A. Young and Helene "Stanley" Young. Stan was preceded in death by her parents and step mom, Thelma Young, Robert (Red) S. Floyd (husband) and Nancy Tilden (sister).

Stan and Red were married on August 14, 1955 in Wichita, Kansas and spent the majority of their married life in Belle Plaine, Kansas. After retiring, Stan and Red moved full time to Lake of the Ozarks where boating, fishing and entertaining were their favorite pastimes. After a few cold winters at the lake, they decided to winter in Weslaco, Texas and spend their spring, summer and early fall at the lake. In May of 2018, Stan and Red moved to Newton to be near their family.

Stan was well known for a multitude of things, to include her canned vegetables and fruits that were grown in their garden. Christmas was always a special time with all the homemade cookies and candies. If you were lucky, you would receive a package of her Christmas treats!
Stan had a Betty Crocker cookbook that she used for ideas, but rarely followed the cookbook recipes. She would take Betty's recipe and improve it 10 fold. The kitchen was Stan's laboratory.

Stan enjoyed many games from Tic, Slap Jack, Bridge, Pinochle, Mexican Train, as well as other board and card games. She played to win! Not for boasting rights, but rather, to make her opponents better, while rarely boasting on her victory.

Education:
Stan attended East High School where she lettered in girls swimming. She also attended one year at Southwestern college where she met her future husband.

Memories:
While at Red’s parent's farm, the men were about to butcher a cow that everyone thought was dead. As Stan, pregnant with her first-born, ventured to the barn to witness the butchering process, found out the cow was not dead, and as the cow got up and started chasing Stan. She sprinted to a car with an open window and dove in headfirst.

Stan worked for Midwest TV and Appliance for many years as the business manager where she performed accounting, receipt verification and more.

One of Stan's favorite stories to tell was that her Great Grandfather, Edmund Stanley, co-founded Friend's University in 1897! His last name, became a popular name on Stan's side of the family. Her Mom, Helene Stanley Jones and her Mom's twin sister, Geraldine Stanley Jones, both became namesakes. It was decided whichever of the twins had the first child, regardless of the gender, would be named Stanley! For those who wondered why Stan had a boy’s name, now you know! In a doctor’s office waiting room, she loved to watch people’s faces when they called out Stanley (expecting a man) and she stood up. She always enjoyed surprising them and explaining why she was named Stanley.

On September 21st, family members gathered to celebrate Stan's 90th birthday with cake and homemade ice cream. Making it to 90 was the last thing on her bingo card. It was a grand day!

Stan is survived by her son, Larry and Gigi Floyd of Wichita, grandchildren, Erin Faber (Chris), great grandchildren, Harrison, Eliana and Asher, Ryan Floyd (Linsey), great grandchildren, Scottie and Karter; Taylor Floyd (Nicole), great grandchildren, Briar and Brooklyn. Daughter, Terri (Floyd) Alexander (Dennis) of Newton, grandchildren, Matthew Alexander (Sarah), great grandchildren Blake, Paysen and Jace; Katelyn Alexander; Jonathan Alexander (Kristin), great grandchild, Delaney.

A memorial service will be Monday, November 17th at 10:30 a.m. at Petersen Family Funeral Home. A private family interment will be held at St. Mary Cemetery in Newton.

From the Family:
To Stan's special friends at Presbyterian Manor, your prayers and encouragement to quickly return to the garden apartment (guessing you wanted more opportunities to beat her at cards or to walk the halls) was the motivation she needed to bounce back from multiple illnesses. For the staff, especially in the kitchen, you made Stan’s life better!
