Socorro “Cora” Alvarez
June 1, 1925 – June 12, 2024
Cora Alvarez, cherished mother and beloved grandmother and great grandmother, passed away peacefully on June 12th, 2024 in Wichita, KS.
Cora was born in Saginaw, TX on June 1st, 1925, to Rodrigo & Guadalupe Lopez, the oldest of seven children. She spent her childhood in Barclay, KS and would later meet her husband, Saymon Alvarez in Osage City. They were married on October 27th, 1951 and lived happily together until Saymon’s passing in 2006.
She was very proud of her family and loved watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports. You could always find Cora on the sidelines or in a bowling alley cheering them on. She rarely missed a chance to support their endeavors. She was a fierce competitor herself, especially in bowling and Uno. She loved to watch all sports on television as well, including WWE wrestling. She loved cooking for her family, her homemade tortillas were always the highlight of any family meal and her freshly baked sugar cookies will be forever missed. She spent the entire year making confetti eggs for Easter, a Mexican tradition she made generational. She loved to watch her family hunt for eggs then smash them on each other’s heads to celebrate a new beginning.
She enjoyed cooking, ironing, shopping (especially on QVC), traveling to army reunions, out of town tournaments, riding the train to see her siblings in California, and always welcomed family and grandchildren to travel with her.
Cora is survived by her children: Barb (Pat) Zenner and Ric Alvarez; grandchildren, Todd Zenner, Marcia (Bubba) Rhodes, Melissa (Kevin) Barton, Gabriel (Destiny) Alvarez, Victoria Alvarez, Kirsten Zenner; great-grandchildren, Wyatt & Hanley Barton, Marah & Jaxon Zenner, Sayer Rhodes and Naveya Alvarez; siblings: Tony, Lucy, Dan, Martha (Jesse), Henry Vega and many in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins as well as Carissa Palacioz-Domebo, who was like a granddaughter to Cora.
She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Mike and Celia; husband Saymon and grandchild Toby Zenner.
She will be remembered and missed by all the lives she touched.
