Sheralyn Goering

Sheralyn Faith Goering, age 64, of Newton, Kansas, passed away on September 14, 2026, from pancreatic cancer, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, and devoted service to others.

Sheralyn was born on April 27, 1962, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and from the beginning of her life she carried a gentle spirit and a deep love for the people around her. She was the daughter of Willard and Martha Wolfe and grew up in a family that helped shape her strong values, kind heart, and enduring faith.

Sheralyn attended elementary school in Saskatoon and later graduated from Mount Royal Collegiate High School in 1979. She continued her education, earning a two-year diploma from Swift Current Bible Institute in Saskatchewan. She also completed a one-year certificate in early childhood development in Saskatoon, and later graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas. Her education reflected both her commitment to learning and her desire to serve others in meaningful and practical ways.

In 1982, Sheralyn volunteered in Hutchinson, Kansas with Mennonite Voluntary Service. It was here where she first met and got to know Roy while they both lived in a unit house. Sheralyn & Roy were married in Saskatoon on October 14, 1984. The first years of their marriage were spent in additional volunteer roles with Mennonite Central Committee in Akron, Pennsylvania and again with Mennonite Voluntary Service in Hutchinson, Kansas. On November 19, 1989, they celebrated the birth of their daughter, Amy, in Newton, Kansas. Soon after, on March 1, 1991, they welcomed their son, Alex.

Throughout her life, Sheralyn worked, and later volunteered, in the fields of early childhood and social work. She cared deeply about children, families, and the well-being of those entrusted to her care. Her work was not simply a career, but a calling, and she approached it with patience, understanding, and a sincere desire to make a difference. She was passionate in her convictions, faithful in her walk with the Lord, and loving in her relationships with others.

Following two years of unexplained medical challenges, Sheralyn was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2003. In the years that followed, the disease brought increasing challenges, including fatigue and mobility issues that eventually prevented her from maintaining employment. Despite these limitations, Sheralyn never allowed MS to define her life or diminish her desire to connect with others and make a difference. For more than two decades, she generously gave her time and talents by volunteering with numerous local organizations and supporting those around her in whatever ways she could. Sheralyn also shared her journey with multiple sclerosis by writing a memoir about her experiences, with the hope that her story would offer encouragement, strength, and hope to others facing difficult times. Her perseverance, compassion, and willingness to help others remained a testament to the remarkable woman she was.

Sheralyn’s Christian faith was central to her life. She found joy and strength in her walk with God, and she valued Christian fellowship. She especially enjoyed church activities at First Mennonite Church in Newton, Kansas including teaching children’s Sunday School, playing piano during worship, leading children’s story during worship, and more. The community at First Mennonite is where she found encouragement and a place to share her gifts.

Sheralyn enjoyed playing the piano. As young as age 8, she received multiple awards for piano solo competitions. Music was a source of comfort and joy for her, and it reflected the thoughtful and expressive nature of her spirit. In recent years, she enjoyed teaching her grandchildren piano lessons.

She also cherished time with her family, which was very important to her throughout her life. Family highlights included vacations with children and grandchildren. She often spent time after school playing board and card games and reading books with grandchildren. Her love for family was steady and sincere, and she treasured the moments shared together. Those close to her will remember her warmth, her encouragement, and the way she made others feel valued and loved.

Sheralyn will be remembered as a faith-filled and loving woman whose life touched many hearts. Her presence brought comfort, her words brought encouragement, and her example pointed others toward the goodness of God. She lived with purpose and grace, and her memory will remain a blessing to all who knew her.

She is remembered with love by her husband, Roy Goering, her father, Willard Wolfe, her sister, Jacqui (Kim) Krahn, her brother, Cameron (Twila) Wolfe, her daughter, Amy (Dorian) Funk, her son, Alex Goering, and her grandchildren, Micah, Logan and Sarah Funk. She is predeceased by her mother, Martha Wolfe, and parents-in-law, Homer & Dorothy Goering.

As Scripture reminds us, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” This well-known verse from Matthew 25:23 speaks fittingly of Sheralyn’s life of service and devotion. She leaves behind a testimony of faith lived out with humility and love, and her earthly journey is now complete in the peace of her Savior.

A Memorial Service will be on October 6, 2026, at 11:00am at First Mennonite Church, 429 E First St, Newton, KS. A light lunch and time of sharing will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall.
