Russell Lewis "Rus" Stark, age 96, passed away peacefully at home on December 9, 2025, in Newton, Kansas. Born on December 30, 1928, in Anthony, Kansas, Rus lived a long and full life marked by faith, family, and an unwavering work ethic.
Rus began his higher education at Fort Hays State in 1947, where he majored in basketball-an early sign of his lifelong love for sports.
His professional journey was as diverse as it was industrious. Over the years, he worked as a farm hand, an inspector at Cessna Aircraft, a truck driver, a computer operator, and helped build concrete grain elevators. Each role reflected his tireless dedication and adaptability.
In 1957, while living in California, Rus and his brothers, Leonard and Dale, joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a decision that would shape the rest of his life. He served a mission in Kansas beginning in 1960 and went on to hold several leadership positions within the church, including Bishop, Stake Quorum of the Seventy, and High Priest. His deep religious conviction was evident in every aspect of his life and service.
Rus was known for his commitment to family and his joyful spirit. He shared his life with his beloved wife Jacque and together they raised ten children. His legacy continues through 45 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren who carry forward his values and zest for life.
A man of many interests, Rus found joy in rock hunting-especially collecting mammoth teeth, and later in life raising chickens and playing Rummikub. He had a competitive streak when it came to games like basketball and ping pong. Sports remained a lifelong passion; he enjoyed golf, baseball, tennis, football-mostly all sports-and followed them with enthusiasm throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 8 siblings, and is survived by his little brother, Dale. Rus leaves behind a large and loving family who will remember him for his laughter, strength of character, and unwavering devotion.
May the memory of Russell Lewis "Rus" Stark bring comfort to those who knew him and serve as an enduring example of faithfulness, resilience, and joy.A funeral for Rus will be held on Friday, December 12, 2025 at 10:00 AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Newton, Kansas.
