Richard Lee Maxwell, 71, of Newton, died on September 15, 2025, at NMC Health in Newton, Kansas. Born on September 11, 1954, in Newton, Richard lived a life rich in adventure and fulfillment. He married Alicia Gregan in 1980 at the Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Brooklyn New York and she survives.
Richard dedicated 32 years of his life to the Merchant Marines, graduating from the Kings Point New York Merchant Marine Academy in 1976, sailing the world's oceans and embodying the spirit of exploration and dedication. Following his retirement, he remained rooted in his community, sharing stories of his travels and adventures. He was a 1972 graduate of Newton High School, where he excelled both academically and athletically, becoming an accomplished track star and a multi-instrumentalist. His achievements were recognized in 2005 when he was inducted into the NHS Hall of Fame.
Those who knew Richard describe him as a loving, kind, patient, hardworking, and above all, funny man. He was known for his great sense of humor, which brought joy to all who interacted with him. Richard found immense pleasure in spending time with family and friends, and his greatest joy was nurturing relationships with his beloved grandchildren—Lily, Colin, Dublin, and Elizabeth.
Richard is survived by his devoted wife, Alicia Maxwell; his sister, Sharon Behnke; his brother, Tom Maxwell; his son, James Maxwell; and his daughter, Siobhan Dennis. He was predeceased by his parents, John L. Maxwell Jr. and Martha M. Brodhagen.
A visitation will be held at Petersen Family Funeral Home located at 215 N Main St, Newton, KS, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with a Rosary at 6:00 P.M., On Wednesday September 24, 2025 the family will be available during the visitation times to greet the family, A Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary Catholic Church at 106 E 8th St, Newton, KS, at 10:00 AM on September 25, leading to his interment at Greenwood Cemetery, 1100 East First Street, Newton, KS.
Richard Lee Maxwell leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and adventure—a true testament to a life well-lived. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends, who cherish the memories made during his remarkable journey.
