Richard Lee Maxwell, age 71, of Newton, Kansas, passed away on September 15, 2025, at NMC Health, surrounded by loved ones.
Born on September 11, 1954, in Newton, Kansas, Richard was the beloved son of John and Martha (Brodhagen) Maxwell. From an early age, he exhibited a remarkable blend of curiosity, determination, and humor—traits that would define a life full of adventure and heart.
A proud graduate of Newton High School, Richard distinguished himself as a talented athlete and musician. He lettered in cross country in 1969, 1970, and 1971, and became the state champion in distance running in 1971. In recognition of his achievements, he was inducted into the Newton High School Hall of Fame on January 7, 2005. He was also a dedicated member of the school band, playing multiple instruments and receiving the Instrumental Music Honor in 1971. He graduated with the Class of 1972.
After high school, Richard pursued a life of exploration and service by enrolling in the United States Merchant Marine Academy in New York. He graduated in 1976. Over the next 32 years, he sailed across the world’s oceans, serving as Chief mate of one of the largest merchant ships in operation.
In a moment of lighthearted celebration on March 3, 1972, Richard was named an "Honorable Justice of Hitchin," ceremonially "hitched" in Dogpatch USA.
On September 27, 1980, Richard married the love of his life, Alicia Ann Gregan, at Mary Queen of Heaven Church in Brooklyn, New York. Together, they built a beautiful life grounded in love, laughter, and shared adventure. They welcomed their son, James, in 1982 and their daughter, Siobhan, in 1985. Becoming a father—and later a grandfather—brought Richard his greatest joy.
Richard loved spending time with his grandchildren—Lily, Colin, Dublin, and Elizabeth. He had a passion for travel, good food and drink, music, and was known for his enjoyment of fireworks and unforgettable parties. He brought laughter and joy wherever he went.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Richard will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, kind heart, steady patience, and deep love for his family.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Alicia; his children, James and Siobhan (Bobby); his grandchildren, Lily, Colin, Dublin, and Elizabeth; his brother, Tom; and his sister, Sharon; and many more who know him.
