Mary Jo West, 69, of Sedgwick, Kansas, lovingly known as "Moj" and "Mojo," left this earth in the early morning hours on August 26, 2025. Born on May 30, 1956, in Wichita, Kansas, Mary was the daughter of Tom and Mary (Coon) Massey. On September 17, 1983, she married the love of her life, Samuel "Lewis" West, in Wichita, and together they built a beautiful life filled with laughter, love, and countless cherished memories.
Mary's personality was one of a kind: sassy, loving, blunt, witty, and always ready to bring a laugh. She was known for her huge heart, always putting others before herself, and her ability to make everyone around her feel special. Whether it was playing card games with her sister Toni at the senior center or enjoying a quiet afternoon on her front porch, watching the birds—especially her beloved cardinals—Mary found joy in the simple moments that others often overlooked.
She had a love for adventure, fondly remembering snow skiing with Lewis before they had children and the unforgettable experience of riding the Mamba, where she ended up feeling far more sick than she'd bargained for. A true lover of life, she found solace in the beauty of nature, especially when watching rainstorms roll in with her daughter, Tessa, and enjoying the sights of sunsets and sunrises. She was a gentle spirit who loved all animals, and nothing brought her more peace than watching squirrels play outside her window.
In addition to her family, Mary’s passions included shopping, trips to the casino, and, of course, reading a good book—always seeking new stories to immerse herself in. Her sassy wit and sharp humor never failed to leave a smile on the faces of those who knew her.
Mary is survived by her husband, Samuel "Lewis" West; daughter, Tessa West; and sister, Toni Ablah. She is preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Mary (Coon) Massey; and brother, Daniel Massey.
Mary Jo will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who had the privilege to know her. May her memory continue to bring joy to our hearts, as we know she is now at peace, watching over us with the same bright spirit that made her so unforgettable.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00am on Tuesday, September 2, 2025 at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel in Newton, Ks. Following the service will be a time of remembrance with family and friends in the Chapel where all who knew her are invited to come and share in the love and laughter that she gave so freely during her life.
Memorial contributions in Mary's name may be made to the Park City Senior Center.
Rest in peace, Mary Jo. You will always be our Moj, our Mojo.
