Mark D Stockman, 64, ascended to heaven on Friday, June 27th 2025, peacefully at his home in Peabody Kansas, after a year and a half long battle with Pancreatic Cancer.
Mark was born April 11th, 1961 in Bakersfield, Ca. He grew up in several towns prior to his family settling in Orangevale, Ca. He enjoyed his childhood playing baseball and spending time with his friends. He often talked about playing wiffle ball in the pasture – emphasizing how upset the neighbor lady would be if they hit the ball over the fence, and finally admitting there were many times it was intentional. He also enjoyed jumping the fence at the pool with his friends only to be caught and taken home by the cops. When he was not getting scolded for his shenanigans, he found his fun in playing flashlight war with his Pops and neighborhood friends. Many family vacations were spent at the family cabin in Lake Tahoe, where he discovered his passion for nature.
In 1979, Mark married Diana and moved to Kansas. Although the union did not last it was the blessing that made him a father to his son TJ and first daughter Tasha. In 1982, Mark married the love of his life, Janelle. This union also blessed him with his youngest daughter Kari Angel. Mark moved his family of 5 to the Peabody area in 1989.
Mark’s devious antics did not stop as he became an adult. He often joined his softball team in jumping the pool fence after a late-night tournament and had bottle rocket wars at the lake with his friends. Marks kids were not spared from his jokester personality and pranks, from putting shoe polish dots on foreheads, putting chairs over sleeping heads, and making the car dance to Michael Jackson while driving down the road; he was always looking for ways to make people smile. He enjoyed every moment he had with his family and was often known to remove all the furniture from the living room to play “knee ball” with his kids. Mark also enjoyed taking his kids camping and fishing, watching football, playing games with his friends, golfing, bowling, and softball. Some of his many athletic accomplishments were earning his perfect ‘300’ bowling ring, two ‘299’ bowling rings and even winning a car at a bowling tournament.
Just when Mark thought he had all the blessings in life he was promoted to “Papa”. He constantly reminded everyone that being a grandparent was better than being a parent. His grandchildren became the light of his life. He enjoyed sending surprise ice cream treats and making random silly phone calls to his grandchildren. He loved teaching them to fish, and was over the moon when they joined him in his love of outdoors, animals, and nature. He was over joyed each time one of his grandchildren harvested a deer, saying that brought him more happiness than if he had harvested it. His pride was multiplied with each grandchild that attended or graduated from college.
Mark had an entrepreneurial spirit, with the goal of owning his own business. He achieved this goal in 2007 when he purchased a ‘Hometown Sears’ store in Emporia, Kansas. He ran a successful business with the help of his family until he retired in 2012.
After retirement he started to focus on his love of hunting. This passion helped form an unbreakable bond with his son-in-law’s, from talking about the next season to practical jokes there was never a dull moment when these three were together.
In 2024 Mark was honored with the title “Great Papa”. Having his great granddaughter around helped ease the difficult times he had been walking through. There was always a light in his eyes each time she entered the room. Mark was again full of joy when he was told he would be a Great Papa again!
Mark’s life can be summed up in one word: Love. He loved his family, his friends, and everyone he encountered. Mark knew no stranger and would help others with no hesitation. He loved with all he had and his love will forever remain his legacy.
