Loren Dean Reusser, age 93, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2026, in Wichita, Kansas, surrounded by the love of his family. His daughters, Judy Reusser and Susan Pechanec, along with his granddaughter, Krystal Dark, were by his bedside as he took his final breath.
Born on December 9, 1932, in Walton, Kansas, to Abraham C. and Mabel (Schlender) Reusser, Loren became a well-known and beloved member of the Hesston and Newton communities. Throughout his life, he was recognized for his unwavering faith, servant's heart, boundless energy, and quick wit. Affectionately—and sarcastically—nicknamed "Drip," Loren never seemed to slow down. He lived every season of his life with remarkable enthusiasm, never losing the energy and determination that defined him.
Loren graduated from Bethel College before proudly serving his country in the United States Navy as a Petty Officer during the Korean War while stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. The discipline and commitment he developed during his military service became hallmarks of the life he lived.
On June 1, 1954, Loren married the love of his life, Peggy Stout. Together they shared 70 wonderful years of marriage, building a life centered on faith, family, and service. Peggy preceded him in death, but the legacy they created together lives on through their three daughters, Sharon, Judy, and Susan; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Loren dedicated his life to educating, mentoring, and serving others. He began as a professor at Hesston College before accepting a three-year missionary assignment to Taiwan in 1966. Upon returning home, he served as the business manager at Tabor College and later taught at Eastern Mennonite College and Bethel College. No matter where he was, Loren found joy in investing in young people, coaching countless athletes in cross country and track, and encouraging them to pursue excellence both on and off the course.
Never one to shy away from a new challenge, Loren began a completely new career at the age of 54 as an over-the-road truck driver. He found great satisfaction in life on the open road and continued driving until the age of 86, when he finally hung up his truck keys and retired. His willingness to embrace new adventures reflected a lifelong belief that it is never too late to pursue something new.
A devoted Mennonite, Loren faithfully lived out his beliefs through service to his church, his community, and organizations such as the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). Whether serving across the world or close to home, he believed that faith was best demonstrated through action.
When Loren wasn't serving others, he was rarely sitting still. He loved tending his garden and was a familiar face cheering on the Bethel College Threshers at athletic events. For many fans, no game was complete without Loren's fresh kettle corn. With his signature enthusiasm, he delighted in launching bags into the crowd like missiles, creating a tradition that brought smiles to generations of Bethel supporters.
Long before he was coaching athletes, Loren was one himself. As a young man, he loved running track and was always striving to break records. That competitive spirit never left him. Whether teaching, coaching, driving across the country, serving others, or tackling the next project, Loren approached life with determination, optimism, and joy.
Loren will be remembered for his unwavering faith, infectious energy, playful sarcasm, tireless work ethic, and deep love for his family. He had a remarkable ability to make people laugh, encourage those around him, and leave every place a little better than he found it. His legacy of service, perseverance, and love will continue to live on in the countless lives he touched.
Funeral services will be held at First Mennonite Church on July 31, 2026 at 10am. Additional service details will be announced by the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Faith Mennonite Church, Bethel College, or the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in honor of Loren's lifelong commitment to faith, education, and service.
