Lanny Dean Jones, 86, of Newton, Kansas passed away on June 12, 2025, at Paramount Community Living and Rehab Center. He was born March 7, 1939, in Frankfort, Kansas to Marvin and Emma Smith Jones at the home of Mrs. McGhie (a registered nurse). He is survived by his wife Jane F. Jones, his older brother Jerry Jones and his family, and his son Michael and his family.

Following his early childhood, Lanny attended kindergarten in San Diego, California and 12 years in the Frankfort, Kansas schools. He graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Wildlife Conservation. He worked for 32 years with the Kansas Fish and Game Commission that later became Wildlife and Parks. He married Jane Young on August 3, 1968, at the Old Mission Methodist Church in Fairway, Kansas. They had a son Michael Glenn, born in Pratt, KS. Michael married Rachel Dirks, and they have two sons, Gavin and Connor.

Lanny enjoyed the outdoors. He loved golfing, following professional golf, camping, birding and summers at their cabin in Dubois, Wyoming. He was a youth sports coach for several years, coaching multiple sports teams that included his son Michael. He loved exploring his family genealogy and enjoyed working for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance at the Newton Public Library.

A family visitation will be held at Petersen Funeral Home on July 26, 2025, from 4-7 pm.
