Jay Alden Sommerfeld, 76, passed away on February 19, 2026. Born in Hesston, Kansas on November 22, 1949, to Clarence and Annabelle Sommerfeld, Jay lived a life defined by service, hard work, and a profound love for the natural world. Following his military service, he dedicated many years to his local community, working as a respected building inspector for the city of Newton, Kansas. Beyond his career, Jay was an avid outdoorsman who was happiest fly fishing by a river . A passionate fisherman, he generously shared this love with others by volunteering with Healing Waters in Wichita, where he helped his fellow veterans find peace and physical therapy through the art of fishing. Jay is survived by his beloved son, Boone, and his brother, Gordon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Annabelle, and his sister, Joyce. A service to honor Jay’s life will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, February 25, at Petersen's Funeral Home in Newton, Kansas."
