James "Jim" William Piland

James William Piland (1935-2026)

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of James W. Piland, 90, on March 22, 2026, at his home in Newton, Ks. Jim, known to most of his family as Pop, was born October 13, 1935, in Wagner, Ok, to his parents Hubert and Elizabeth Piland. He was the oldest of eight children.

He was devoted husband, father, grandfather who loved entertaining his great-grandchildren. Jim joined the Army National Guard in April 1954 and then the Army in July 1956 and retired November 30, 1976 at Fort Still in Oklahoma. He was stationed in Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Germany, Virginia, Missouri, Louisiana, and Texas. He married the love of his life, Lois I. Strong on June 26, 1955 and they had 67 years together before her passing in 2023. From this union they had 5 amazing children; Jami J. (Tony) Piland Dominguez, David L. Piland, Matthew D. Piland, Lois E. Piland, and Andrew J. (Debra) Piland.

He had 7 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and many great-great grandchildren and numerous extended family members that he leaves behind. He was preceded in death by his wife Lois; son, David; parents, Hubert and Elizabeth; and all of his siblings, Donald, Michael, Sylvia, Billy, Aida, Hubert II, John and Grace; and great-grandson, Ezra.

A graveside service will be held April 3rd, 2026, at 11am at Greenwood Cemetery in Newton, Ks.
