Gerald "Gerry" Alan Wiens

Jan 2, 1954 — Oct 22, 2026

Newton

Gerald “Gerry” Alan Wiens passed away unexpectedly in his Newton home on October 22, 2026.

Born on January 2, 1954, in Newton, Kansas, Gerry was the son of Wm. Kenneth and Florene Wiens. Gerry attended Halstead schools and was a graduate of the class of 1972 at Halstead High School. He attended Hutchinson Junior College for 2 years, served in the Netherlands for a year in the Inter-Menno program, then finished up with a Bachelor’s Degree from Bethel College in 1978.

Gerry married Beverly Smith on October 24, 1992 at the First Mennonite Church of Halstead. They were married 25 years prior to her passing in 2018.

He attended the First Mennonite Church of Halstead with his family throughout his childhood. He was baptized and received as a member of the church in the Spring of 1970. Later, he and Beverly were active members of the First Missionary Church of Newton.

Gerry was an excellent caregiver to Beverly as she suffered a long-term illness that left her wheel-chair bound for 20 years. Through it all, he managed Bev’s healthcare, took care of most household duties, while working a full-time job. Together, they remained upbeat and positive by supporting each other.

Gerry worked various jobs in his adult life: running his own Insulation Business, working at Mosiman’s Industries in Sedgwick, and most recently as a welder at Agco Industries in Hesston.

Gerry enjoyed his retirement lifestyle of playing pickleball at the YMCA, singing in various groups, hanging out with friends (#1 hangout place — Moxie’s), and being involved in political causes. He easily made friends with people and treasured both his old and new friends.

He is survived by daughter, Kristi (Scott) Flaming of Wichita; sisters, Prisca (Gary) Krehbiel of Rago, and Wendy Wiens of Wichita; and nine grandchildren, Emily and Chloe Flaming, Kaitlyn (Ron) Lucier, Chris Rutschman, Allison Reiner, Zach Smith, and Mia Smith. He was blessed with 5 great grandsons and 1 great granddaughter. He also had 3 nephews; Lenard (Rebecca) Krehbiel, Garrett (Topaz) Krehbiel and Dallas (Jennifer) Krehbiel; plus 2 great nephews and 5 great nieces.

Gerry was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Wiens; his parents: Wm. Kenneth and Florene Wiens; and brother: Albert Wiens.
