Gene Kristenson

Gene R. Kristenson, 87, of Newton, Kansas, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. Throughout his illness, Gene faced each day with quiet strength, dignity, and the unwavering faith that had guided him throughout his life.

Gene was born on August 12, 1938, in Ottawa, Kansas to Ernest and Alta Marie (Bell) Kristenson. He grew up with a strong sense of duty, integrity, and service that would become the hallmark of his life. After graduating from high school, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy.

On September 21, 1958, Gene married the love of his life, Barbara Jane Tharp. Together they shared nearly 68 years of marriage, building a life centered on faith, family, and serving others. They were blessed with two sons, Bryan and Jeffrey, and daughter, Dari, completing the family that became Gene's greatest joy and source of pride.

Following his military service, Gene dedicated his professional life to serving his community and country. He began his career with the Newton Fire Department as a firefighter before serving Harvey County as Emergency Preparedness Director and later as County Administrator where he was instrumental in implementing the 911 emergency system. He concluded his distinguished career with the United States District Courts, where he continued to exemplify the integrity, professionalism, and commitment to public service that marked every chapter of his working life. 

Gene's commitment to public service extended beyond his professional career. He also served on the Newton Board of Education, believing deeply in the importance of providing future generations with the best educational opportunities possible. Having completed only a high school education himself, Gene often considered himself blessed by the opportunities he had been given throughout his life. His own experiences instilled in him a profound appreciation for education and a desire to help ensure that others would have every opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.

A man of deep Christian faith, Gene was an active and devoted member of First Baptist Church of Newton for many years. His faith was evident not only in his words but in the way he treated others—with kindness, humility, compassion, and quiet confidence.

Outside of work, Gene found great enjoyment on the golf course. An avid golfer, he appreciated both the challenge of the game and the friendships it fostered. Whether spending time with his family, enjoying a round of golf, or serving his church and community, Gene found joy in the simple blessings of life.

Those who knew Gene will remember him as a man of unwavering integrity, dependable leadership, and genuine humility. He believed in doing the right thing even when no one was watching and never sought recognition for his many accomplishments. His steady presence, thoughtful counsel, and servant's heart earned him the respect of colleagues, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Gene is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Kristenson; his sons, Bryan (Cheryl) Kristenson and Jeffrey Kristenson; his daughter, Dari (Bryan) Owens; his brother, Gary (Connie) Kristenson; his grandchildren, Scott (Tabby) Kristenson, Jessica (Jim) Davis, Joel Kristenson, Abigail Kristenson, and Avery Kristenson; Koby Schuman and Bon Oliver Owens; his treasured great-granddaughter, Nora Kristenson; along with many extended family members, dear friends, former colleagues, and fellow church members.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Marie Kristenson, and his brother, Thomas Kristenson, who passed away in childhood.

A memorial service celebrating Gene's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at First Baptist Church of Newton.Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Newton or Good Shepherd Hospice in honor of Gene's life and legacy.

Gene's life was a testimony to faithful service—to his country, his community, his church, and above all, his family. He believed he lived the American Dream. His legacy of faith, integrity, humility, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him. While he will be deeply missed, his family rejoices in the assurance that he is now at peace in the presence of his Savior.
