Florine Kay Eitzen (Voran), 91, passed away on Monday, September 8, at Kidron Bethel Village in North Newton, Kansas. Born on April 27, 1934, in Pretty Prairie, Kansas, to Paul J. and Hulda K. (Graber) Voran, Florine’s life was deeply rooted in the values of her Mennonite faith—empathy, compassion, and service—which she carried with grace throughout her life.
A gifted musician, Florine graduated from Bethel College in 1956 with a double major in voice and piano. Just two days after graduation, she married D. Stanley Eitzen. She often said that she wanted to marry quickly before all the best singers and musicians left for the summer—a reflection of the important role that music played in all aspects of her life.
Florine began her career teaching music in public schools in Galva and Topeka, and wherever she lived, she brought music to life—directing choirs for both children and adults, and singing in community ensembles. Her passion for nurturing young voices led her to establish and conduct a select Community Children’s Choir in Fort Collins, Colorado, which she led for fifteen years with creativity and dedication.
Florine and Stan raised their three children—Keith, Mike, and Kelly—in Lawrence, Kansas, before moving to Fort Collins in 1973 and eventually returning to Newton in 2005. Back in Kansas, they reconnected with cherished college friends and beloved family, including Florine’s sister Norma Preheim and husband Marles, and brother Myron Voran and wife Mildred.
Florine’s legacy lives on in her children: Keith (Dawn), Mike (Kris), and Kelly (Scott); her six grandchildren: Christopher (Kat), Nicole (Jeff), Jake (Alise), Zach (Kayleigh), Cooper (Sarah), and Max; and her great-grandson, Brody. Her love, wisdom, and music continue to echo in the lives she touched.
A memorial service celebrating Florine’s life will be held on Monday, December 8th, at 3:00 p.m. at Kidron Hall, Kidron Bethel Village, in North Newton, Kansas.
