Bonnie Lee Hughes

Bonnie Lee (McCann) Hughes, age 94, passed away on February 8, 2026 at the Newton Presbyterian Manor.

Bonnie was born on June 12, 1931 in Halstead, Kansas to Leo and Genevieve (Fleetwood) McCann. She graduated from Newton High School with the class of 1949.

In 1950, Bonnie married her high school sweetheart, Allen "Wayne" Hughes. They were blessed with three children and, later, multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a dedicated homemaker and stay at home mother. Throughout her life, she enjoyed her flower garden and bird watching.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Edith Knott; and children, Kevin Hughes and Jane Hanes.

She is survived by her son, Darren Hughes; grandchildren, Mattie, Jenny, Amanda, Delani, and Devin; and great-grandchildren, Skylar, Griffin, Austin, Kaylee, Naomi, Sarah, Azalea, Justus, and Huckley.

A funeral for Bonnie will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, February 18, 2026 at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, Kansas. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Good Shepherd Hospice, and may be left in the care of the funeral home.
