Arlene Merkey

Our beloved friend and family member, Arlene Merkey was welcomed to Heaven August 12, 2023. Arlene was 88 years old.  She was attended by a niece and longtime friend at her passing.  Arlene was born April 2, 1935, in Burr Oak, Kansas to George and Jessie (Ball) Merkey. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Bob Merkey, and her sister, Rowena Wilson.

Arlene was an adventurous and strong women! She spent her life loving and serving others. She was a graduate of McPherson College ultimately obtaining a Master’s Degree in Social Work.  Arlene obtained a student pilot certificate and conducted a solo flight in 1955.  As a young, single women she traveled to Europe with Brethren Services ministering to war refugees after World War II. She made lifelong friends in a number of countries and shared these friendships with extended family.  While never marrying she was mom to her six nieces and nephews and travelled extensively with many of them. She was actively involved in the lives of her extended family and friends, encouraging them and inspiring them to live a full, God honoring life.

Arlene began her professional life in a Denver Colorado Hospital but spent the majority of her career in a Jefferson County Colorado school district.  She impacted the lives of many students and their families as a counselor and social worker. She developed lasting friendships with coworkers.  Arlene and a dear friend, Frances O’Brien, shared a home in Lakewood, Colorado and they cared for Arlene’s mom and dad in the last years of their lives while in this home.  Arlene and Frances later moved to Park City, Kansas to be close to her sister and family.

A graveside celebration of life will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 14 at Fairview Cemetery in Portis, Osborne County, Kansas with family members presiding.
